SUMMARY:Five Machines for 2025
DESCRIPTION:A little over a year ago\, a book on the history of mills and early American manufacturing came into the hands of visual artist Mark W. Mulherrin. While the book featured few images\, it was the photographs of water-powered grist mill interiors that captured his imagination. These images became the inspiration for a series of paintings\, and later\, dimensional cardboard works he describes as “2.5D”—blending the physical depth of cardboard with the illusionistic techniques of classical perspective. \nThe five machines currently on view came later. They are based on 19th-century engravings of industrial machinery\, reimagined in painted cardboard. For Mulherrin\, the act of coaxing steel machines out of paper was a compelling challenge. The tension between the materials—ephemeral and fragile paper used to depict heavy\, durable iron—creates what he calls a “wonderful confusion.” Each machine becomes a kind of portrait\, imbued with personality\, function\, and a life of its own. While Mulherrin doesn’t claim to understand the machines’ precise purposes\, he finds them endlessly fascinating from an aesthetic and intuitive standpoint. His admiration for the original machinists and engineers has only deepened through this process. “It’s one thing to make them out of cardboard—challenging\, but not an exact science\,” he says. “To make them for real… I can’t imagine this.” \nAll works are available for purchase. Inquiries can be directed to markmulherrin@gmail.com or Lisa Yordy at the American Precision Museum. 20% of proceeds will be donated to the Museum. \nMark W. Mulherrin is a visual artist based in North Adams\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Engineers Week 2026
DESCRIPTION:Engineers Week @ APM\nWinter Break Programs | February 2026 \nCelebrate Engineers Week with hands-on challenges designed to spark curiosity\, creativity\, and problem-solving. Throughout February break\, families are invited to drop in and explore engineering through building\, testing\, and playful experimentation. Bring your imagination and we’ll provide the materials\, tools\, and prompts to get you started. \nThese activities are designed to be flexible and welcoming\, with challenges that can be adjusted for different abilities and interests. Families can join for 30 minutes or stay longer as projects grow and ideas evolve. All programs are included with museum admission. \n⌚ Monday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, 11 am–2 pm📍 American Precision Museum\, Windsor\, VT👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families (adult supervision required)🎟️ Included with museum admission \n\nMonday\, February 23: Maze Craze\nDesign and build a handheld marble maze filled with twists\, turns\, and clever traps. Families will start with a laser-cut base and add walls\, obstacles\, and pitfalls to guide a steel marble through the maze. Magnetic traps introduce an extra layer of challenge as you test\, refine\, and re-engineer your design. \n\nWednesday\, February 25: Catapult Challenge\nExplore the power of precision and interchangeable parts as you construct mini-catapults using laser-cut wooden pieces. Test how changes to tension\, angle\, and arm length affect performance\, then scale up your thinking. Using everyday building materials\, families will design and build larger launchers to fling Nerf balls toward hoops and bucket targets. \n\nThursday\, February 26: Marble Roller Coasters\nEngineer a marble raceway using sturdy piers\, ramps\, and supports. Experiment with curves\, slopes\, and loops\, and add interactive features like gates\, spinners\, and switchbacks. With pre-scored components and inspiration pieces available\, families can build simple runs or challenge themselves with more complex designs. \n\nPlan your visit and spend February break discovering how engineering turns ideas into action.
